MCRP
Core Courses

Core courses are intended to ensure that each student acquires a broad range of planning fundamentals and methods skills.

Each MCRP student is required to complete 24 semester credit hours of approved MCRP course work in the following core courses. All students must take the following seven three-credit courses as a part of their 39 credit curriculum:

MCRP students must successfully complete 39 credit hours of approved MCRP course work. Eighteen semester credit hours are in planning and methods core courses. Eighteen additional semester credit hours are in the student's area of emphasis and the electives requirement. Additionally, all students complete a three-credit hour capstone experience. Course selection is made in consultation with the student's academic advisor.

Planning Core Sequence (12 Credits)
Each MCRP student is required to complete the following core courses. The core courses emphasize the knowledge and skills necessary to be an effective planner.

  • CRP 500 History and Theory of Planning
  • CRP 501 (PUBADM 520) Introduction to Community and Regional Planning
  • CRP 502 Economic Applications to Community and Regional Planning
  • CRP 503 Plan Making and Implementation
  • CRP 600 Assessment [Capstone Course]
    The Capstone course is a culminating activity that is a collaborative problem-solving project - planning practicum.

Methods Core Sequence (9 Credits)
The methods core courses require students to develop skills that will enable them to be effective planners and also provide an opportunity for students to obtain methodological skills that will be most appropriate to their professional goals.

  • CRP 504 Introduction to Policy Formation-Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
    Or
    GEOG 560 Introduction to Geographic Information Systems
  • CRP 505 Community Data

Students must also choose one of the following core courses to earn 24 credits of core course work:

  • CRP 510 GIS Applications and Visualization Techniques in Planning
  • CRP 511 Qualitative Methods
  • CRP 512 Quantitative Methods
  • GEOG 561 Remote Sensing and Image Processing
  • GEOG 562 Geographic Information Analysis
  • GEOG 563 Geospatial Project
